Game Informer: Letter to the Editor
Posted in Life on February 22, 2010

When Game Informer Australia was released, I decided to give it a chance, and after reading the first issue I sent along something to the Editor- a shot letter to the editor about the world of PC gaming, and how Steam is kicking it back as one of the players- least sales wise.

So an issue passed and I heard nothing from them, then before the third issue I was told that my letter would be published, and sure enough I subscribed to the magazine and what do you know- it was published.

Game Informer Australia is a clone of the original USA version with a bunch of Australian content. Okay its not a clone, as most of the magazine is written for Australians, and the only things which are copied from the USA version seem to be the cover feature.

It is quite obvious that PC gaming would have died years ago, but services like steam seam to have given it a leg up in the right direction. I doubt many PC gamers would have spent such money during the holidays if it weren’t for such services. It would seem that people are moving more and more to consoles. The Wii is the family console and the 360 and PS3 seem more gunned on taking the PC’s spot as the “hardcore” option. But the annual sales on Steam have kicked a lot of my friends back to the PC. Given this, I think it’s obvious now to what sells and doesn’t sell on the PC, so it seems clear sailing from here instead of a stormy ride.

Buy the magazine in stores now to see the editor Chris said about my letter, as well as read up about L.A Noir the cover’s feature article- and a bunch of other Australian Goodies!

The Third Pillar Effect: Talking Nintendo Hardware
Posted in Games on February 12, 2010

We are coming up to the end of a generation, in the next few years we are going to start seeing new announcements of consoles and other hardware which either replaces the current offerings or removes itself and creates a 3rd pillar situation.

I’m going to post in this article a few pictures of some mock ups either developed by the community or “leeks”. I’m going to talk about what the design would offer at the end of the day, and what would be most likely the direction of Nintendo.

Nintendo is the only one which is having major rumors this year which relate to their hardware- major wise. Theres a few whispers from other people about what Microsoft or Sony would be doing, but Nintendo is the one to watch, expecially after the Nintendo DS and Wii, both unique and interesting revolutions.

Let’s get this out of the way first, if Nintendo is going to reveal a console it will be a evolution- and revolution additions to it would be minor. If its a handheld however, a revolution is more likely.

The Nintendo DS has already seen 5 different consoles under its branding. Not all of them can be revolutions, and with the XL just been an evolution of the slightly enhanced DSi, its about time Nintendo shows the world a new handheld.

Rumors are also stating the device could be a third pillar.

In the header is a device which is rumored to be leaked by the group SYNDiCATE, called the Dawn, the device offers some unique prospective to the gaming industry. At the end of the day it could be a rumor, and fake, but I’m more going to talk about why something like this would be a more worthy choice for Nintendo then making a new Wii or DS, which even then is possible.

I’m not saying this particular device is real, fact it could be a load of hogwash, what I’m talking about here is the idea behind it, a Game Boy style third pillar.

For those who remember, the Nintendo DS was men’t to be a third pillar device. It wasn’t going to be in direct competition to the Game Boy, but did however feature a game boy port- which was removed from the “i” range.

Nintendo decided the Nintendo DS brand was doing better then the Game Boy brand and decided to ditch the Game Boy brand.

The Game Boy Micro was the last device from Nintendo which represents the Game Boy range, with rumors dating back to the birth of the virtual console on the Wii, we are yet to be graced with such a service for the DSi which would show the world the Game Boy games long missed.

Before the Nintendo DS, Nintendo was thinking about the next Game Boy- and quite seriously. It kept its traditional style for the most part, but rumors say it was more powerful then what the past consoles had been.

The device disappeared and the DS because of the Mirco’s failure moved on to becoming the top console. The only company to kill a Nintendo handheld- seemed to be Nintendo themselves.

If Nintendo is thinking of brining back the Game Boy line- then a third pillar device is one of the ways to do it.

Nintendo is most likely going to keep the device if it was a new Game Boy- games only, meaning it wont be like the Nintendo DS line with various multimedia features. It would also have much more simple games, reministant to the days of old, the games Nintendo had forgotten, button set would be similar to what the Game Boy has had in the past.

No carts, nothing- thats what this rumored deviced pictured above contains. I personally belive this would be the way to go, expecially if the GB line would be returning.

Nintendo catering only to the hardcore- per say, or the “retro geeks”, essencialy nothing bar downloadable services, GB Ware and GB VC, etc.

Most likely not there direction- it could just be a potato and a hat, or another DS or Wii or something stupid like a HD ad-on.

Though with Nintendo making events are events this year, its quite possible something big will happen- even if its not new hardware.

The perfect Dexter ending
Posted in TV & Movies on February 7, 2010

It seems it’s obvious where the series Dexter is heading, at least- the TV version spun off from the books by Showtime. With the ending of Season 4 opening up possibly the end of Dexter, and rumours that Season 5 will be the last (and it should dam well be). Dexter’s demise is imminent.

The books will forever continue as long as the writer wants to write them, and have nothing to do with the TV series or anything else Showtime works on with the IP. The only thing keeping them together is the fact the TV show is loosely based on the original book.

Morals are the only thing which will destroy Dexter, for the simple fact if he doesn’t meet his maker by the end of the series, apparently society will break down. The fact of the matter is letting Dexter win, leads false impressions that doing what he does is right or some bullshit like that. So when the series is enlightened as a TV series, and in the public eye, the end result has to be that Dexter loses.

Something like a book however, could continue to be written for decades to come, and the simple fact here is, if the author decides that Dexter should die, things could be contradicted or “flash backs” or other creative licences which would just be bloody insane on the small screen.

On the second fact is that somehow Showtime is probably thinking of moving over from the small screen to the big screen, with rumours that there is a Dexter movie on the table. It’s quite possible that Showtime will either use the movie to kill Dexter off (or do it in the TV show and then have the movie as a separate direction).

Flowing around in my head, I thought of one of the possible outcomes of how Dexter would be dealt with when it happens.

Let’s picture this, Deb confronts Dexter early on in the season and Dexter pretty much reveals all. Sounds stupid that it would happen that way (which it probably won’t), but Deb is the kind of person who would take the whole dam season to struggle with why she should or shouldn’t turn in him in.

She obviously would take the little brats and look after them, or least help on certain days or something, now this is a no brainier on that happing, I doubt we will see Dexter just kill the kids, or leave them or something, but anything is possible.

Now either some other big bad serial killer or something else back lashing from the previous season will be out to get Dexter, but let’s use the possibility of Deb killing him.

She could set up the perfect alibi too, with the fact that later that night she would storm the house for a raid and have it so Dexter is killed when she gets in because, you know she is family and wants to talk to Dexter prior or something, iddno.

So that’s where she will kill Dexter, and have it in some badass ritual way like he would of done it, with all the victims and shit he’s killed around him- something really stupid like that would be awesome.

Then again, I’m probably just crazy as shit, the series won’t end like this- and if it did, dang.
